Mets shortstop Jose Reyes has an overactive thyroid and is expected to remain in New York while the results of additional blood tests are used to determine his treatment. Doctors cleared Reyes to play Friday after he took a blood test to follow one conducted during his physical. But team doctors in New York wanted to take a closer look at the speedster and pulled him out of pregame stretching.

Hillsborough County Jail reports show that Mark Newman, the Yankees' senior vice president of baseball operations, was arrested Monday night. He reportedly refused to take a blood-alcohol test. Jason Vargas pitched into the fourth inning in another impressive outing but the Seattle Mariners lost 6-4 to the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday. Vargas, one of four candidates for Seattle's fifth starter spot, allowed two hits, walked one and struck out one in 3 2-3 scoreless innings. The 27-year-old left-hander threw 49 pitches while becoming the first Mariners pitcher to get into the fourth.
